Edward L Erdman
Environmental Fund
Edward L Erdman
had been a member of the Placemakers Luncheon Club since its inception
in 1971. It was decided to hold a special party - Placemaker 90 - to
celebrate Mr Erdman’s 90th birthday - on 4 July 1996. £5 was added to
each ticket price to buy a birthday gift. The party itself was a huge
success. 300 attended but many who couldn’t sent cheques - not only for
£5 but for larger amounts. And then several very generous gifts were
offered - running into thousands of pounds. A fund approaching £40,000
was created which Mr Erdman could not and would not accept. It was
proposed instead to set up a Trust Fund in recognition of the
contribution that Edward L. Erdman made to the world of property during
his distinguished professional career and so the Edward L Erdman
Environmental Fund was registered with the Charity Commission.
The Trustees
were introduced (through the late Professor Donald Denman) to the
Wilson Centre and the Cambridge International Land Institute at
Fitzwilliam College. Led by Dr Derek Nicholls, the Institute already
offers distance learning and residential courses and has close contacts
with universities throughout the world. An Environmental Library seemed
an essential part of the Institute’s project for distance learning
through the world wide web. The Trustees have part-funded the project
through payments totalling to date £25,000. Additionally, the British
Council for Shopping Centres has pledged £15,000 - and the trustees
hope that other prestigious professional organisations will extend the
value and scope of this international educational and professional
service.
CILI is
extremely grateful to the Trustees of the Edward L Erdman Environmental
Fund for their generous donation and their continuing personal interest
and support. The Institute is also most grateful to the British Council
for Shopping Centres Educational Trust for the grant which will
facilitate the development of the collection of information resources
in the retail sector.
The Edward L
Erdman Environmental Library was formally launched in celebration of
the 94th birthday of Edward L Erdman on 4 July 2000.
